So Here's the Story

I found out that someone at work googled me, and didn't like even the veiled reference to the parent suicide that I wrote about last week. This person thought that if the information was public it would be problematic. I'll leave out the detail that the kid told every kid in school every detail. But, regardless, instead of coming to me, the person went to the tech person in my building, who then brought it to my attention. She didn't tell me to take down the blog, or even stop writing, just letting me know the concern. And, also, that she routinely googles all staff to see what comes up, based on an incident they had regarding what a student wrote on her blog a few years ago.

I love this site. You all know that. But, I'm not going to invite trouble at work because of it. So, it's hidden until I decide what I want to do going forward. I got through an entire campaign for public office without one episode about my blog, but three weeks into the new job, someone's upset enough to complain.

It really makes me sad. Thanks for everyone who's accepted my invite. I'll try to keep posting as much as I have in the past. I'm just a little pissed right now.

Well...obviously it's a shame that you got pushed into such an action. But at least you have alternatives such as this, and your other site.

I have no doubt that my work life would go a lot more smoothly if I didn't blog about my job. I've heard through the grapevine (and via no more than one degree of separation) about a bunch of people at HQ who read my blog, but none of them would tell me to my face about it. Screw 'em all, I say.

That has got to suck. I am sorry to read this.

My biggest fear about writing online is that someone from my work will somehow stumble on my site, and I don't even write about work!!

Hope things will work out. Thanks for the invite to continue reading your site!

That's amazingly petty. I am totally anonymous, but I imagine a determined stalker could find out who I am and cause real trouble.

I just avoid anything remotely work related, but a lot of people get comfort from being able to vent. Just don't get dooced.

Thank you for sending me the invitation. I'm sorry you had to experience this: sooner or later, I suspect every one of us runs into a workplace obstacle like this. It's never fun when it's based on someone else's ignorance.

I wish I could wave it away, as you deserve better.

But good call to put it behind an invitation-only wall. I'd do exactly the same thing if something similar happened to me.
