Gotta Get Away From That Same Old Same Old...

I may or may not be rocking out to this song later this evening. I also may or may not be dressed in leopard skin spandex and a fish net t-shirt while doing so.

Happy Halloween, kids... ;)

You Were My Sun...

My esteemed partner in crime at my other website considers this to be the best burn song ever. He's obsessed with it. He's got a point.

Just Like A Tattoo

I know, the pop is just oozing everywhere, but I love this song for the chorus.

Another one from Liz's and my ever-evolving collaborative mix. Figured out the theme yet?

We Can Sleep On The Beach If We Ain't Got A Ride

This is a song from their first EP, which I did not previously have, and bought before leaving the venue last night. They closed the show with this song, and it just further proves why this band is a force to be reckoned with, and why they bring me such joy.

The show was short, as the House of Blues apparently still caters to the Euro-dance night that the club that stood in its place for years always did. But I wish all multiple act shows were as well oiled as that one. First band, Broadway Calls, hit the stage promptly at 6, broke down at 6:30, second band (Jesse Malin = DOUCHE) around 6:45, third band, Murder by Death, onstage by 7:50, and Gaslight by 9:00.

It was weird being at an all ages show again; the crowd was an interesting mix of people, and kudos to those two moms I saw standing off to the side while their upper middle and high school aged kids rocked out to the pop punk goodness all night.

But the Gaslight Anthem were fantastic. I love the sense of romance and big dreams from "the boys from Little Eden" that they constantly send out to their fans. I love the fact that "The 59 Sound" made me cry as I listened to it live, because although they don't know him, GA wrote a song about Andrew as poignant and as rousing as he would have wanted it to be.

But this song, the closing number, I stood there letting it wash over me, wishing Liz was with me to hear this song, because, if she doesn't already have it, it will become her latest song crush. It certainly is mine.

"I'll love you forever,
if I ever love at all,
with wild hearts,
blue jeans, and white t-shirts..."

It's These Blessings So Hard To See Sometimes

Liz and I added this song to the mix yesterday. I'm going to see them tonight, and she says this song is "my" Gaslight Anthem song, mostly because I think they ripped off Billy Bragg and Wilco completely when they wrote this (see here), and I had a temper tantrum about it when she and Nick were here for Bruce in the spring.

At any rate, despite the plagiarism, I still love this band, and am really excited to be hanging out with one of the indie kids tonight. This is an indie kid type of show.

And, it goes on the mix.

When This Train Ends, I'll Try Again

From the soundtrack to a fantastic movie. This is the track that made me rethink Skynyrd "in all its misunderstood glory," to quote Patterson Hood. This is playing in the scene when the party at the moontower is breaking up, and my sister Cat actually started ending all of her parties with it as well.

It fits, for many reasons.

A Notebook Full of Dry, White Pages

Feeling the lack of the blogging fire lately, so I need to jump start this. When I blogged every day in 2008, I managed to find something to say, whether it be in words, or pictures, or music. Right now, it's music, because music ALWAYS says what I want to say, in some form.

Liz and I have been working on a collaborative mix. Keeps us connected, and reflecting across the miles. I won't tell you the specific theme, and the song I'm posting today is not the most illustrative example of the theme, but once you figure out what we're saying, you'll find this choice an interesting one. Plus, any song that begins with the line, "I dreamed about killing you again last night, and it felt alright to me..." needs to have a place of honor SOMEWHERE.

Every song I post has something to say, to someone. I think this one, I'm talking to myself.

From Wilco's "Summerteeth" album, which is glorious.

And BANG! That's When I Remember My Dream

Last night, this entire song played in a dream I had about you. I remember when she played this live the night we saw her, and I was so overjoyed to hear her sing this one, particularly for that last verse, and for standing there with you. The live version you captured from that radio stream was the one playing in my dream, not this one, but still, I dreamed about a moment of real joy I experienced with you, so early on, and seemingly now, so fleeting, and I woke up with that and sadness wrestling in my heart this morning.

"But in the garden of simple
where all of us are nameless
you were never anything but beautiful to me...

...and what i meant to say is xxoo which means i'm thinking of ya
which means i've been thinking of you
all along..."

I guess this song is still what I wish for, when it comes to wishing about anything regarding you.
