Wild Kingdom, Less Than 5 Miles From Home

The image you see to the left there was taken in woods less than five miles from my house, where my father has permission to hunt private property. Those are coyotes. Those are VERY LARGE coyotes that, judging by their height and coloring, are most likely part WOLF. Seriously, look at the haunches on the one in the back there.

These animals are not to be trifled with; they will eat your pets. If you live in my area and you've lost a cat in the last decade, I'm sorry. Your cat was not lost; your cat was LUNCH.

Looking at this picture, I feel compelled to both post and respond to this Red Hot Chilli Peppers' song. Actually, true men DO kill coyotes. There's a legal season, and they are predators.

Walk in the woods very carefully, friends, and keep your pets close.

Clowns to the Left of Me, Jokers to the Right...

Stuck in the middle. That's what today feels like, and I'm not alone. Sometimes, Wednesday just FEELS like a hump. Smack dab in the middle of some long slog of a week, you're tired, unmotivated, cranky, just off in all kinds of ways.

It started out well; as I approached the drive-through window to get my coffee this morning, I was greeted with the sentence, "Julie paid for it." Julie, my sister's soon-to-be sister-in-law, often is right in front of me in line; our timing is like that. So, that was great, a little good karma to start the day off on a positive jam. But then, fielding a morning full of parent complaints, horrible weather, and a long meeting with the parent I affectionately dub "Queen of the Cook-a-toos", I was toast by 3:00. I literally had to force myself off of the couch to go to the gym today, and even then, I shortened my workout. Just enough to make it feel like I did "something" productive. I texted Liz, to get some moral support, and she's in the exact same spot today. We laughed as we both wished for a life where all we had to do was sit on our couches and relax.

It's just one of those Wednesdays. Hang in there, everyone.

With Love, From William Miller

(Hats off to whomever gets the reference. I know the partner in crime will.) ;)

I've been keeping this under my hat for a bit, as I don't want writing for OANS to conflict with my new duties. But, I've signed on to be a reviewer at PlaybackStl.com. My first review was posted today, Spoon's Transference. I was positively giddy seeing my name in the byline on the main review page.

This is a direct link to the article. Please explore the other reviews; there are some great writers there, including my friend from the old Bob Mould BBS, Jason Green, who pointed me in the direction of this gig. So, I dedicate this review to him, for getting my foot in the door, and to MJ, for telling me to buy this album in the first place.

Once Again...

...I am a candidate for public office, in a contested race. The candidate that is challenging me and my colleagues on the board is the man who I took over for in my current job two years ago.

Right. I'm sure the press will find that connection quickly. He's a good guy. Not a good special education guy, but a good guy all the same.

Here comes a crazy spring!!

If You Want Me, I'll Be In The Bar

Watching Season 1 of "Spectacle" last night, Diana Krall sang this song, and I was amazed I hadn't heard it previously, or at least, not consciously heard it.

Joni is amazing, and the older I get, the more amazing she does.

Emergency Worthy?

So, my second favorite band, the Drive-by Truckers, will be playing my (mostly) beloved House of Blues here in Boston on April 2. Is a pair of tickets to this show at the "emergency level" of finding the credit card and shelling the $50-ish it will run me for a pair? Well, yes, of course they're worthy. Just listen to this live track. They're fucking amazing!!

I don't think I have a choice, really.

Maybe, Actually, No Child Left Behind?

The Obama administration is proposing some sweeping reforms to NCLB, reforms that could actually bring about the good intentions of this law, and eliminate some of the more punitive aspects. This quote is illustrative of what the problem has been, and of a good potential solution:
The White House wants to change federal financing formulas so that a portion of the money is awarded based on academic progress, rather than by formulas that apportion money to districts according to their numbers of students, especially poor students.
The reason schools get flagged as failing, even when ALL STUDENTS in the school have made progress over the course of a year, is that there are a certain number of students in specific subgroups, more specifically, minority subgroups and special education, that didn't make "enough" progress. You get just ONE subgroup that doesn't hit their target, and the whole school fails.

The proposed reforms also seek to base teacher performance on measures of student progress, actually looking at whether students, "leave high school 'college or career ready'", which means they are literate and can think critically. This is hugely important, on so many levels. It also, finally, proposes to give MORE money to schools with struggling subgroups, while recognizing the achievement of the ones that succeeded.

We, as teachers, need to be held accountable for our students' progress every year. How can we call ourselves good teachers if we have data that show our students aren't learning? It's what's frustrated me about the unions' stance about merit pay and the evaluation process for so long. You can have the most well-designed, research-based, aligned to the state standards lesson ever created, but if four out of five of your students cannot tell me, as an observer in your classroom, or a scorer on your state test, what you wanted them to know by the close of the lesson, then you are NOT TEACHING. The only real way to measure effective teaching is by measuring student learning. It's as simple as that, and always has been.

I'm hopeful. Let's see if this pans out over the course of this term. Good luck, Mr. President.
