Musical Irony

I don't actually feel "fine"; I've got a cold. Nothing major, and I actually felt worse yesterday. But, since my calendar had a non-negotiable or two on it yesterday, I soldiered through, and took my sick day of rest today. As much a mental health as physical health day, but the sneezing and coughing is legitimate enough.

Christopher and I are heading to Boothbay Harbor for the weekend tomorrow afternoon. I'm really looking forward to re-exploring that area again, potentially seeing Kristian and Rob, and having lots of unscheduled time in front of us. We both tend to burn the candle at both ends, and this winter and spring season have been particularly action-packed for me. Now that things are winding down, it's no wonder I'm sick. Definitely looking forward to some quiet. I'll likely front load songs for Friday, Saturday, and Sunday.

Let's hope the weather cooperates, too.

Ouch

I wasn't aware my ears were even plugged up, until I yawned, and heard a "pop" in the right one. Now, my ear is in pain.

I hate being sick. I hate my schedule this week that is making it nearly IMPOSSIBLE to get to the doctor. And, I hate that I have all this work to do, and I really just want to go to bed.

/Rant. No one likes listening to grown women whine.

Sick Again

Although trying to fight through it, as I have to BE IN COURT TOMORROW. Real court, too, not special education court or truancy court. Long, convoluted story that I really should sell to MTV. Suffice it to say, it actually has nothing to do with me, or anything I've done; I'm being subpoenaed as a witness.

I think it's just going to be one of those germy years for me; my first year of a new job is always like that. My very first education job, right out of college, I worked in a kindergarten. I got two stomach bugs, one of which lasted four days, the flu, and every cold that made the rounds between October and May. My first year as a teacher, no stomach bugs, but I did get the flu and colds. And this year, it looks like round two of tonsillitis. Wonderful.

So, I did a little Christmas shopping locally, which wiped me out. I made vegetarian chilli for dinner (and lunches for the rest of the week), and I've been channel surfing for the last hour. Well, I was surfing, and then had to invoke the cardinal rule of surfing: if you hit "The Godfather", the ride's over.

Leave the gun. Take the cannolis.

Thoughts from the Sickbed

Well, the couch, anyway, where I've been camped out for the last two days.

How is it that chicken soup will instantly cause you to turn a corner on an illness? Seriously, have there been scientific studies on this, because dammit if I didn't start to feel better after finishing that delicious bowl of soup. Inquiring minds want to know.

My iTunes collection, on shuffle, makes me laugh. You mean I own both Black Flag and Def Leppard, and was equally pleased by them coming one after the other just now? Really? Huh... I'm sure there's something in the DSM-IV about that.

I actually feel fine, until I try to use my throat for anything, you know, like swallowing or talking. We'll see what tomorrow brings.

I Seem To Recognize Your Face...

When you're woken up at 4:30 am by the pain in your throat, you know you're pretty sick. Such was my morning. Fortunately, I have programmed the school's sick call line into my cell phone, which, by reason of mad texting during the end of last night's Sox game (WOOHOO!!) was conveniently on my bedside table. Eventually, I got up, made an appointment with the doctor and reluctantly left my house.

I look terrible today. Obviously. I'm sick. So, of course, sitting in the doctor's waiting room was someone I went to high school with, who I haven't seen in probably 15 years. And of course, we recognize each other. He was always really attractive when we were young, and he still is, although somewhat "soft" around the edges these days (aren't we all?). We had a pleasant conversation, as pleasant as I could be feeling like someone had ripped my throat out and made me gargle glass. Sent off with a prescription, I'm back on the couch, under a blanket, cup of tea at hand, trying to determine if work is on the docket tomorrow.

There's no point to this story, really, other than the small observation of how time softens many things, memories, bodies, resentments. Wouldn't you agree?

Counting the Cars on the New Jersey Turnpike

Feeling tired, and likely getting sick, just before vacation. Wonderful.

Normally, I go on a little road trip during this week, but since I took my DC trip by train last weekend, I'll have to count the cars in my head this time.

You Give Me Fever...

...so seriously, take it back, whoever you are that gave this illness to me.

I stick my filmy tongue out at you. Now hand me another tissue.
